Thank you to the 502 parents, students, teachers, and staff who voted in participatory budgeting (PB) this year! Everything is a bit harder during COVID, so we appreciate you showing up to make your voice heard.
The PA is committing now to include the top four projects in its budget for next year:
We will reassess with the school administration later in the summer to determine if we can fund additional projects, once we know more about the school budget and the school reopening plans. If you’re able to, please donate to the Parent Association, to help us fund school and family needs during these uncertain times.
The full vote results are below, and you can read more about all of the projects here.
Special thank you to Megan Jonynas, Megan Demarkis, Irene Varon, and Principal McDonald for supporting PB and embracing democracy at PS 139! And thank you to the team of parent volunteers who helped develop the projects and engage families – Josh Lerner, Itzy Garay, Haymme Marin, Maria Duran, and the amazing school language liaisons!
Dear PS 139 families,
We hope you are safe and healthy. It’s a difficult time to be a parent, during the dual pandemics of coronavirus and police violence. Black lives matter and black students matter. We stand with black families, and the Parent Association is still here to support all of you.
We want the city budget to address the greatest community needs, and we want the same for our school budget. So we’re asking all PS 139 families to help decide how we spend our money. The Parent Association and Principal McDonald are committing $15,000 to projects that support PS 139 kids and families, and we want you to decide what we fund, through participatory budgeting.
Students, parents, staff, and teachers developed 12 amazing proposals for the PS 139 community – to provide food, language support, clubs, and activities for kids and families. You decide which ones to fund!
PLEASE VOTE HERE by June 19. The Parent Association will fund the projects with the most votes, at least $15,000. Each student, staff member, and teacher can vote once, and each family gets one vote per child at the school. Choose your top 4 projects.
If you’re able to, you can also donate to the Parent Association, to help fund these projects. We know many families are not able to donate. If you can donate, the funds will support PS 139 families.
**Also, save the date for a virtual PA general meeting June 17th at 8pm to learn more about school plans and share your ideas. More details to come soon.
